![]() ![]() To create a public link, you can use the web client or the desktop client of SWITCHdrive. If sharing via public links is not an option for you, then you can also provide a SWITCHdrive voucher to the external partner so this partner can create the own SWITCHdrive account. This person does not need to have a SWITCHdrive account and can access the data via web browser. You can share your data with a so called public link to any person. Note that a share with an expiration data gets a small clock indicator next to the cogwheel icon (1). When the expiration date of a shares is reached the share to the user will automatically be removed without any notice to the user who has received the share. To set an expiration date just add (or change) the expiration data (2). You can also add an expiration date to your share. After the email was sent, the "notify by email" disappears, so you can only inform the user by email once. SWITCHdrive will immediately send an email to the user about the shared data, including a link to quickly view the shared data in a web-browser. If you want to inform the user about your new share click on the button "notify by email". Once you have selected the user or group, you can adjust the sharing permissions by clicking on the tiny cogwheel icon to display the sharing options, see (1) in the image above. If no such instance or user can be found, an error message will be displayed. If you select the"Federated" entry then SWITCHdrive expects that this user is at another ownCloud instance (for example at ETHZ using Polybox). However pay attention to always select the"User" entry. You can also search a person by email address, see screenshot above on the right. If you cannot find the correct person, type only the last name of the person and then scroll through the list of names. Just type the name of person as you know it, with lower or uppercase letters, with ö,ä,ü,é,è etc. The list of matching users also shows the email address of the user in gray in case you need to distinguish users with the same name. Wait a moment until SWITCHdrive displays a list of matching users, then pick the correct person or custom group from the list. In the sharing section enter the first name and the last name of the person (or the name of the custom group). It’s still early days, but Filedrop is simple, elegant and does exactly what it should – albeit with the glitches you expect in an early beta.In the SWITCHdrive Web-Client, locate the file or folder that you want to share and click on the icon. In all, Filedrop has the potential for taking the functionality of AirDrop and extending it to most of the computers and mobiles in your home. Extra functionality includes being able your phone as a “wireless USB stick” for transferring files between networks, as well as streaming photos and music from your phone to compatible – and connected – devices. That’s set to change with Android and iOS versions on the way, however, which promise to go further. It’s all quite slick and works as it should, but is in an early stage of development, which means there are some glitches to iron – we had the Windows client crash once when it declined a file – but on the whole it seems to work well, within its limitations, which at this point in time see it restricted to simply acting as a simple file-sharing tool. Once installed, launch it on your various computers and it’ll provide you with an easy way to drag and drop folders and files between each: just drag your selection on to the desktop you wish to copy the files to, then switch to the receiving computer if necessary to click Accept and transfer the file.īy default, all files are transferred to your Downloads folder – you can change this default by clicking the button at the bottom of the Filedrop window or click the folder name on the Decline/Accept pop-up dialog to change it for the current file only. Like AirDrop, it works on a single local network, with both wired and wirelessly connected computers. The problem is, you’re limited to Macs running Lion or later for the feature to work, which is why a number of third parties have rushed to market to provide similar functionality for as wide a range of devices and platforms as possible.įiledrop is one such device, and currently works on both Windows and Mac, so is perfect for sharing files quickly and painlessly across a mixed network. Apple’s AirDrop feature was designed to simplify the process of transferring files between Macs on a wireless network.
